Mooncake Tea Pairing

September 12, 2016

Every year on the 15th of the 8th month of the Chinese Calender marks an important day for the Chinese all around the world. Filled with lighted lanterns, laughters and festive food, significantly the mooncake, the Mid-Autumn Festival or known as the Mooncake Festival is held to celebrate the harvest and to worship the moon. Traditionally, mooncakes filled with lotus paste and salted egg yolk are given to friends and neighbours. As we modernized, more flavours are introduced, some novelties include Snowkin Mooncakes with Chili Padi and Laksa Leaf Lemongrass by Janice Wong.

One of our favourite ways of enjoying these decadent mooncakes is to pair them with a good cup of tea. Here’s our top favourite picks for the perfect pairing.

Chocolate Snowskin
Smooth, dark and beautiful, Chocolate Snowskin Mooncake are velvety on the outer layer and chocolatey on the inside. Pair this cocoa goodness with Grand Cru Black Teas such as the Red Robe.

Durian Snowskin
Sweet, creamy and pungent, this King of fruits make the mooncake extra special the South East Asia. Pair this with Imperial Pu’Erh. The woody and nutty notes complements the strong creamy texture of the Durian Snowskin

White Lotus Mooncake
The sweet and almost pine-like and walnut flavours of the White Lotus pairs well with Lion’s Peak Dragonwell Tea. This roasted green boasts an aroma of roasted chestnut, a hint of cocoa and vanilla. Relish in the decadent profile with the White Lotus Mooncake

Green Tea Snowskin
Sweet and slightly earthy, the green tea snowskin is best paired with clean notes of white tea such as the Peony Jade.

Sesame Snowskin
Roasty and nutty profile of the Sesame Snowskin, it’s best paired with another roasty profile of tea such as the Houjicha.
