Working from home? Here are some tips to increase productivity and maintain your well-being

From having our homes as a place of refuge and comfort from the stress of work life, to not being able to leave the house daily and having to work from home may definitely drive us a little crazy, especially for extroverts. As the global pandemic situation evolves rapidly, many businesses have either come to a halt or enacting a work-from-home plan, but life still goes on. That being said, this is just a temporary measure to ensure the safety and health of everyone and our loved ones.

So for those working from home, here are some useful tips from our team to help increase productivity and make the most out of our current situation.

1. Get started early

It’s definitely tempting to wake up late when working from home, especially when the transition from the comfort of your sheets to your desk is minimised without the usual morning commute. However, don’t let the morning sluggishness wear away your motivation! No matter where you’re working from, get into your daily routine and set a plan for yourself. Clock in by writing down all the tasks you have to get done for the day, jot down deadlines and set a time for a workout or break. It is best to work immediately after your breakfast so you can accomplish more stuff by noon – then you can treat yourself to a nice home-cooked meal before continuing with the rest of the work. Don’t wait and let the day just play out, act as if you have a schedule.

2. Dress like you’re headed to the office

The idea of being in your PJs all day sure sounds comfy to everyone but truth to be told, it’s not going to help you get things done if you’re feeling like it’s a weekend, roaming your house in your pyjamas at 3PM. Freshen up and get dressed the moment you’re up, do your hair and makeup as if you are headed to the office. Dressing up will help put you in a professional mindset to kick start the day right. We understand it might be troublesome to don the full attire, but even just a shirt or a pair of trousers is better than nothing.

3. Have a dedicated space for work

Choose a spot that you don’t usually lounge at, to help you get in the right frame of mind. Do not work in the same room as your bed as this will make you feel far too relaxed. If you have to work in the same space as your tempting bed, then tidy up and do not leave it disheveled. Do not hop over to Netflix for an episode or two, or kick your feet up, as if you are lounging around your house on a weekend. Pretend you are not at home to help you simulate a work environment and train your brain to be in work mode when you’re at your designated space to help you work efficiently. If you’re the type to get distracted easily, put on your headphones and focus with our curated 6-hour playlist that will carry you through the work day!

4. Take care of your health and well-being

Our HDB flats are as big as it can be – being stuck at home means we are unable to walk around as much as we used to. To keep your mind awake and your body energised, take proper breaks every few hours. And, if you’re not being quarantined, get out of the house for some fresh air, a quick errand nearby or buy groceries at the supermarket and cook a proper meal for yourself. Staying totally sedentary is not healthy – Do some simple stretches from your desk, or some easy, quick yoga routines so that you do not get too stiff. On top of that, put on a pot of tea from our selection of teas – from muscular brews that sharpen the senses, to soothing light restoratives that calm the spirit and mind, there’s something suitable to uplift your day and keep you healthy.

5. Talk to your team

You may feel lonely not being able to see your co-workers for days on end. But hey, we’re living in the 21st century with advanced technology so hop on a call to check-in with your peers and find out how they are doing. And while you’re at it, you can also align your goals and deliverables. Make sure you are reachable and in contact so that everyone is on the same page. Regular check-ins like this can make everyone feel like part of a team and that we are all in this together.

To keep yourself sane, we also recommend not working past the usual working hours. If you have a routine, stick to it and draw clear lines between work and personal time. Off work hours are for you to sit back, relax and indulge in your comfort space with your favourite snack. We’ve curated some tea-licious indulgence boxes that can be delivered right to your doorstep, perfect for your tea-time snack or movie night. Together, let’s stay home, be socially responsible and hope for the current situation to improve hopefully very soon!

Stay home, stay safe everyone!
